Thanks to the great people at EA, we had a chance to review this game. I'm really kind of disappointed with a few of the game's features being "Downloadable Content." Come on seriously?!? If you are going to have a game with helpful features that you can't use without paying for them, WTF! At least they give you 12 free slots for your created schools. They do give some really awesome new modes like Season Showdown, it counts your game play in a few categories that add up with people all over and give your selected team "credits" (that will be added up after the actual season) as well as allowing you to play the actual games that your team will play in the real season on that same week. A down side is they have sportsmanship on that ranking scale, so if some loser likes to make a lot of useless attempts to hurt other players your team suffers. On the upside you can log onto EA's website and do trivia to also gain some credit for your school and learn some facts about your favorite team that you may not have known.
My favorite mode is Road to Glory. This mode is really in-depth, as you have a whole campus life that you can indulge in. You practice during the day then get to do some night events but you have to balance school work and football. It breaks the monotony from playing game after game... (Ok so it is a "Football" game)
This is an excellent college football game for beginners and vets; the game allows you to set the difficulty as well as offering trading and practice modes. Even better yet, if you have kids or even a girlfriend or friend who doesn’t play games, there’s a mode for them too, Family Play, it basically simplifies the game for kids or the inexperienced to play (or even if you have had too much fun the night before ^_^' ) .... Even the AI has its problems from time to time, I’ve had some players catch a ball in a crowd of like 6 guys and others that are open an just run right past it. For the most part your AI counterparts are pretty good (as long as their stats are decent).
The sounds in the game are really good; they probably have some of the best voice actors I’ve heard. There is one thing though, the background music, I mean I do love hearing a marching band from time to time, but not over and over again. They do break in with some news from time to time. The in-play sounds are pretty good, tackling kind of always sounds the same, but at least different quarter backs' have a variety of voice sounds.
Now one of the most important aspects, controls; where to start? First off you have an amazing array of Audible and Hot Routes; so many in fact they take up four pages in the handbook. I have to confess I’m used to playing these types of game so I had no problem jumping right on in, but for someone just starting it would take some time to master (Its always Family Play for the faint of heart). Another great aspect that really caught my attention as an awesome feature is actual motion sensor function (YES!!! finally another game for the PS3 that actually uses the motion sensor), you can fake snap with the Z-axis (up and down) and hit stick with Y-axis (front and back).
As you all probably know, one of the best features to football games is multiplayer, now not only can you play head to head across the net but up to 4 players can play together on the same console. Most of the people I met online with this game are really diehard fans and just remember online content is not rated (tip for you parents out there; headsets are probably not a good idea unless you know who your kids are playing with.) It can be fun to trash talk a little (or a lot if you’re playing a rival team).
This game has a nice flow and you are playing for the National Championship. As for a replay factor, it is a football game (really what more do you want, its fun, it entertains, and its college). If you get bored easily this isn't a game you will like, it takes time to get a "Dynasty" going. You can play a short game too if you want. I do recommend it for any NCAA fan, a regular football fan, even just for the kids.
