Let me say that it's quite rare for the US to be getting this title seeing as how it was originally a mobile cell phone game. It was released in Japan in chapters and overall took 1 year to play the full game. They were kinder to us though and released the main game + one chapter to us (Although the main game is actually 3 chapters, so, we started off with 4 months worth).
There are a lot of mixed opinions about how they are releasing this game. Every month they will be releasing 3 character chapters for $3 each. The main game was $8 and the final chapter will be $8. Overall, the game is $37 if you get all the characters, making this the most expensive downloadable game on the Wii and will be finished by September.
Is it worth it? The game is great in my eyes. I grew up playing Final Fantasy so the nostalgia factor is making this great. The game uses the same sprites as the old Final Fantasy 2/4 game for enemies but all the characters have new, detailed sprites. Attack animations and spells are pretty much the same but a lot of the new attacks are nicely detailed, yet simple.
Besides recycling the sprites, almost all the music is from the original too. The music always fits the mood of the game so no complaints there. The new music they made fits in nicely, keeping it with the old school quality and sound for the SNES.
The story takes place 17 years after FF2/4 ended. All the characters are off doing their own thing. The world is in danger again and everyone must band together to save it. The main focus is through character chapters, which shows what each character has been up to and how they are reunited. New players won't feel the same excitement as old FF fans.
The battle system uses the same ATB as its original but added some flare to it. You can now use "Band" attacks which is combined attacks with your team mates. After selecting the command you have to wait for your partners to get their turn and charge up the attack. If you get the right team you can unleash up to 5 people team attacks.
From what has been released so far, the game is on the right track. The prologue was a little stale; being mostly spamming normal attacks with 2 characters. Although, the character chapter for Rydia was a lot more fun since she's a black mage with a variety of spells. When all characters unite in the final chapter (20-22 playable characters) you'll have a lot of options and commands at your disposable.
The difficulty of the game is going to depend on preparation and which character chapter you're playing. The prologue was pretty easy. Rydia's story was a little harder, requiring you to grind a little or know little tricks to get hidden items. Both bonus dungeons are challenging and most likely will give you a few game over screens until you hit the level cap.
For $11 right now, you are getting about 5 to 15 hours of game play. The main story for the prologue took me about 4 hours and Rydia's chapter took 3. After you beat the story line you can go through a bonus dungeon, which is INSANELY difficult, to level and get items. All your items, levels, and spells will carry over into the final chapters of the game. Not to mention the bonus dungeon resets certain treasure chests so you can spend tons of time in it farming.
Overall, fans of Final Fantasy 2/4 will find this game to be a great add-on. People who aren't familiar with the series or not into old RPG's probably won't enjoy this as much. The game is solid, although the $37 price tag and wait to finish the game might turn others away. If you haven't played Final Fantasy 2/4 though I'd say use the $37 to go buy Final Fantasy IV for the DS and get a full game right now.
